Why do people go to Ellis island before america?

Because any sovereign nation needs an orderly way to admit or deny immigrants. Ellis Island functioned as a place to process people arriving by ship into NYC. Medical examinations and vaccinations, determining which would be immigrants had the means to earn a living. It's now a museum and a must see if you're interested in the history of immigration to the US.
